Gov’t Provides Special Life Insurance Cover For COVID-19 Frontline Health Caregivers
Government through the Ministry of Health has made available insurance cover for all health professionals and allied professionals at the frontline of government’s COVID-19 response.
This was made known in a statement signed and issued by the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, to all heads of agencies.
“The government of Ghana would like to communicate to the heads of agencies that the frontline staff involved in this [COVID-19] response have been insured under,” the statement said.
The insurance cover include; Group Life Benefit with sum assured of GHc 350,000 per life; Critical illness wth a cover of GHc 25,000 per life; Total Temporal Disability-All causes of GHc 10,000 per life and a Total Premium of GHc 10,309,919.94.
Background
As at March 28, 2020, a total of 2,519 persons have been tested for coronavirus in Ghana, according to the Ghana Health Service.
Among the tested, 1,276 (50.7 percent) were persons under mandatory quarantine with 1,243 (49.3 percent) from routine surveillance activities.
Among all 2,519 persons tested, 141 tested positive, representing 5.6 percent. Also, among persons under mandatory quarantine, 79 representing 6.2 percent tested positive. Among samples tested from routine surveillance, 62, representing 5.0 percent tested positive.
According to an update from the Service, “Only three regions have so far reported cases- the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Upper West Regions from routine disease surveillance. One case has been confirmed in the Upper West Region. The Ashanti Region has recorded 7 of the 8 cases recorded outside the Greater Accra Region. All other 54 cases from routine surveillance were recorded in the Greater Accra Region.”
A total of 731 contacts of confirmed cases are currently being followed up by the contact tracing team. Among contacts, 53 were found to have symptoms and 48 have been tested with one person testing positive.
A total of 231 contacts have completed the mandatory 14-day follow-up, while two people have recovered from the disease, five have died.
